If you want that summer glow without exposing your skin to the harmful rays of the sun then a good fake tan is the way to go. But nothing looks worse than badly applied fake tan! Here are some tips to prep your skin for that glow….
~Waxing/shaving – Waxing should be done at a minimum of 24 hours before tanning and shaving should be done at least 12 hours before. Tanning should never be done on irritated skin or highly sensitive skin.
~Avoid perfume, deodorant or essential oils before applying tan and during tanning process. Deodorant can cause tan to go slightly greenish in colour
~Exfoliation, you have to get rid of any dry skin or patches. Otherwise your tan will stick to the drier areas giving you a patchy look. You can exfoliate with a body scrub or with some dry body brushing. Exfoliating gloves that you can use in the shower are great for a daily scrub in the shower in the lead up to application.
~Moisturising is key to your prep, but leave moisturiser off the body on the day off tanning except for drier areas such as knees, elbows and heels. If you are prone to dry patches in other areas of the body such as upper arms apply moisturiser to those too. Coconut oil is great to hydrate the skin in the run up to the day of tanning.
~Protect your hands if you are applying a tan, either use disposable gloves or a tanning mitt to protect your palms from becoming a slightly undesirable colour.
~Protect your nails from being stained by applying a clear coat of polish before tanning.
~Remember not to wear light coloured clothes while tan is developing as they will be most likely be stained from the tan. Wear something dark coloured or old that you won’t mind ruining.
